Installing Mannington Flooring? 4 Scenarios Where My Mistakes Cost Me $2,800 (and What I'd Do Differently)

There's no 'right way' to install Mannington flooring. It depends on your subfloor, your space, and your expectations. Here's how to figure out what works for you.

I've been handling Mannington installation orders for incoming contractors and DIY homeowners for about six years now. In that time, I've personally screwed up—and documented—a solid dozen significant mistakes. Total wasted budget? Roughly $2,800, plus a fair amount of embarrassment and a few angry calls from customers.

Now I maintain our team's installation checklist, mostly so the new hires don't repeat my expensive lessons. But the thing is: there's no one-size-fits-all answer. The right approach for a bathroom with a shower niche is different from a garage door seal situation, which is different from a whole-house LVT job.

So here's what I've learned, broken down by the four most common scenarios I've seen. I'll tell you where I went wrong, what I should have done, and how to apply it to your own project.

Scenario 1: The Flat-Edge Tile vs. The Beveled Tile (Where I Lost $320)

This is the most common one I see messed up. You're installing Mannington waterproof LVT (like the Adura Max line) next to tile, maybe in a kitchen or bathroom.

What I did wrong (2023): I assumed all tile edges are the same. I installed a beautiful porcelain tile with a very slight beveled edge next to the Mannington LVT. The result? A gap you could slide a dime into. The tile's bevel created a low spot. The floor looked fine, but the transition was a dirt trap.

The fix: I had to pull up 40 square feet of LVT, grind down the subfloor in that area to level it, and re-install. Cost me $320 in extra labor and materials. (Should mention: the client wasn't happy about the delay.)

What I'd tell you: If you're pairing Mannington LVT with a tile that has a beveled edge—especially a rectified tile—you must check the height difference with a straightedge before you set the first plank. Don't assume it'll be flush. If it's off by more than 1/16th of an inch, you need to either build up the subfloor under the LVT or use a transition strip. I now keep a 6-foot level in my kit for exactly this reason.

Scenario 2: The Shower Niche (Where I Learned Waterproof ≠ Water-Sealed)

Mannington's waterproof flooring is excellent. I've installed it in countless bathrooms. But the shower niche—the little alcove you put shampoo bottles in—is a different animal.

What I did wrong (September 2022): I installed Mannington sheet vinyl up inside the niche. It looked great. But I didn't properly seal the seams between the vinyl and the niche's backer board. I used a standard silicone caulk. Within six months, the caulk failed, moisture got behind the vinyl, and I had to rip the whole niche out. Total redo cost: $890, including the tile and waterproofing membrane.

The lesson: Sheet vinyl is waterproof, but the installation is only as good as the seams. For a shower niche, you need a marine-grade sealant (like 100% silicone, not a hybrid) and a proper overlap of the material into the niche. Even then, I'd argue you're better off using a solid surface or tile inside the niche, with the Mannington sheet stopping at the edge.

I can only speak to my experience with residential showers. If you're doing a commercial steam shower, the calculus might be different—you'd probably go with a welded PVC sheet.

Scenario 3: The Garage Door Seal & The Basement Slab (A $1,200 Assumption Failure)

This one hurts to write about. I was installing Mannington's rubber flooring in a garage/workshop. The floor had a slight slope (for drainage) and a garage door at the bottom of the slope.

What I assumed: The rubber flooring would just butt up against the existing concrete curb under the garage door. I assumed the seal would be fine since the rubber is thick and heavy.

The reality: Water came through the garage door seal (not the flooring) and wicked under the rubber. Within a month, I had a mold problem behind the flooring. Total loss: about $1,200 in materials and remediation.

What I should have done: Installed a proper transition threshold—a metal or rubber ramp—before the garage door seal. The flooring should end under the threshold, not butt up against it. I also should have put down a vapor barrier (6 mil polyethylene) under the rubber, even though the concrete slab was old. I learned never to assume a slab is dry enough without a moisture test.

If your project involves where to buy salt and stone or similar materials, that's a tangent—but the principle applies: don't assume the building's existing weatherproofing is compatible with your new floor. Test first.

Scenario 4: The Stair Nose Mismatch (Where 'One Size Fits All' Doesn't)

This one cost me about $400 and a lot of frustration. A client wanted Mannington laminate on their stairs. I ordered the matching stair nose molding (the curved piece that covers the front edge of the tread). On paper, it matched the flooring color and profile.

The problem: The stair nose was designed for a specific thickness of laminate (12mm). The client's laminate was 10mm. The nose piece sat too high, creating a trip hazard.

The fix: I had to order a different, adjustable stair nose model from Mannington's catalog (the 'Versa-Tread' style), which cost more and delayed the project by a week.

The takeaway: Always—I mean always—verify the matching trim is designed for the exact thickness of your Mannington product. Don't trust the sales rep who says 'they're all compatible.' I now have a physical sample board with the exact thicknesses of our most common laminate and LVT products, and I test-fit the nose piece before the first cut.

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

This isn't a checklist. It's a diagnostic. Ask yourself:

  • Is your floor next to a material with a beveled edge? (Tile, stone, or engineered wood with a micro-bevel?) → You're in Scenario 1. Check for a flat transition.
  • Does your project involve a wet area like a shower niche or a bathroom floor with a drain? → You're in Scenario 2. Plan for a separate sealant strategy.
  • Is the floor in a garage, basement, or any space with a door to the outside (especially a garage door)? → You're in Scenario 3. Vapor barrier and a proper threshold are non-negotiable.
  • Are you installing on stairs, or using any transition molding? → You're in Scenario 4. Verify thickness compatibility before you order.

If your situation overlaps more than one scenario (e.g., a basement bathroom with tile next to LVT and a door to the outside), you need to layer the solutions. Don't assume one fix covers the other.

Final Thought: The $50 Test That Saves You $500

In my first year (2017), I made the classic mistake of 'eyeballing' the subfloor. I didn't use a level. I didn't test the moisture. I didn't dry-fit the transition pieces. I've learned to spend $50 on a subfloor moisture meter and a 4-foot level before I spend $500 on materials. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
