How to Match Mannington Flooring with Molding, Trim & Glass: A Quality Inspector’s 4-Step Guide

If you're installing Mannington flooring — whether it's LVT, hardwood, or rubber — and you're trying to figure out how the edges, transitions, and adjacent materials (door trim, glass walls, painted siding) are supposed to line up, this is for you.

This guide covers 4 steps. I’ve been on both sides: reviewing specifications for commercial projects and signing off on installations. The details I’m sharing come from real site walkthroughs, not a brochure.

Step 1: Prep Your Subfloor and Check the Base

Before you even think about moldings, you need a flat, dry subfloor. I’ve seen hundreds of projects where the flooring looks perfect in the showroom but fails on site because the subfloor wasn’t ready.

The concrete slab or plywood base must meet the manufacturer's moisture and flatness specs. For Mannington LVT, the standard is typically ≤ 5 lbs moisture emission per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours (ASTM F1869) and a flatness tolerance of 3/16" in a 10' span. Ignore this and your moldings won't sit flush — they'll rock or gap.

Check the floor before anything else. If you're working with tempered glass partitions or doors, the glass supplier will often require a perfectly even surface. I rejected a job once where the glass threshold sat ⅛" higher than the tile because the installer skipped the leveling step. That was a $2,500 redo.

Checklist for Step 1:

  • Subfloor moisture test passed (per ASTM F1869 or F2170).
  • Flatness OK within tolerance.
  • No cracks or debris.
  • Primer applied if needed.

Step 2: Choose the Right Molding (Burke Edge Effects & Mannington Options)

Here's where people often mess up. Your base molding or wall transition isn't just a decorative strip — it's a functional seam cover. Mannington's Burke Edge Effects series offers a range of profiles for vinyl, carpet, and hardwood edges.

For a standard tile-to-carpet transition in a commercial office, you might pick a hard-surface reducer. For a wall base in a wet area, you'll want a rubber cove base, not painted wood. Burke Edge has specific pieces: cove, reducer, T-molding, stair nosing.

I can only speak to the Burke line, but here's the rule: always match the profile to the flooring thickness. If your Mannington LVT is 5mm thick and your reducer is designed for 8mm, you'll get a trip hazard. I wish I had tracked how many times I've seen that on site — it's honestly embarrassing.

One step most people skip: Check whether your molding color matches the flooring lot. Burke offers color-matched options, but they're dye lots, not paint. Order a sample first. I've had to reject a batch of 200 cove pieces because the color offset was 2 shades off from the main floor.

Burke Edge Common Profiles:

  • Reducer: For transitioning between floors of different heights.
  • T-Molding: For joining same-height flooring.
  • Cove Base: For wall perimeter, especially rubber.
  • Stair Nosing: For stair edges. Must match flooring thickness exactly.

Step 3: Handle Door Trim, Glass, and Hard Edges

Door frames and tempered glass partitions create tricky termination points. You can't just run flooring under a door and call it done. The trim — whether it's painted wood, aluminum, or plastic — needs to overlap the floor edge by at least ¼" to cover any expansion gap.

Tempered glass case: In commercial breakrooms or conference rooms, glass walls often sit on the finished floor. The glass panel sits in a channel, and the flooring must be cut flush to that channel. If the floor expands, it can crack the glass. So you need a gap — at least ⅛" — between the flooring and the glass channel, covered by a metal or plastic trim.

I saw a project where the installer cut the LVT right up to the glass channel with no gap. Two months later, the glass cracked. The client blamed the flooring contractor. The fix: replace both the floor and the glass panel. That cost about $8,000 and caused a 3-week delay.

For standard doors: Under the door is fine. But at the door jamb, the trim (the vertical piece) should sit on top of the finished floor, not be butted against it. Cut the jamb slightly (about 1/8") to slide the flooring underneath. This way, the floor can expand without pushing the jamb.

Checklist for Step 3:

  • Trim overlaps floor edge by ¼".
  • Glass channel has ⅛" gap covered by trim.
  • Door jamb undercut, floor slides under.
  • Expansion gaps maintained per manufacturer spec (usually ¼" at walls).

Step 4: Coordinate with Painted Surfaces (Vinyl Siding, Walls, and Ceilings)

You might ask, "Can you paint vinyl siding?" The answer is yes, but it's not straightforward. Vinyl siding is designed to expand and contract, so standard paint cracks. If you're painting siding adjacent to a new floor installation (say, a sunroom off a Mannington LVT area), you need flexible acrylic paint.

From a quality standpoint: paint adhesion on vinyl is poor unless the surface is cleaned, primed, and painted with a high-quality 100% acrylic latex. I still kick myself for one early project where we didn't prep properly — the paint peeled within 2 years, and the client thought it was the flooring dust that caused it. It wasn't. It was bad paint prep.

For interior walls adjacent to flooring: Base molding hides the expansion gap. But if you're painting the wall a dark color, any gap between the molding and the wall will show. Caulk it. Use paintable caulk, not silicone. I don\'t have hard data on how often caulk is skipped, but based on my inspections, it's about 60% of first-time installations. That's a low-cost fix that makes a huge visual difference.

Quick Paint Rule:

  • For vinyl siding: 100% acrylic latex, flexible formula, primer required.
  • For interior walls: caulk gap between base molding and wall, then paint.
  • For ceilings: no rules here, but be careful with dust from flooring install.

Common Mistakes and What to Avoid

1. Skipping the expansion gap. I’ve seen LVT buckle because the installer ran it tight to walls. Mannington requires a ¼" gap all around, covered by base molding. Not optional.

2. Using wrong trim for the floor height. A reducer for 4mm LVT won't work with 6mm tile. Check the profile height.

3. Not coordinating color across moldings. Burke Edge moldings come in specific color families. Order samples. Match to the actual flooring batch, not a digital swatch.

4. Ignoring moisture in slabs. Moisture doesn't care about your timeline. If the vapor emission is high, your LVT adhesive fails. Mannington's warranty requires a moisture test result <5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft.

5. Painting vinyl without prep. If you're painting siding or trim, clean, sand (lightly), prime, and use flexible paint. Otherwise, it peels.

Final thought: This worked for my commercial projects with Mannington, but if you're dealing with a different flooring brand or a residential vs commercial application, your mileage may vary. Always check the manufacturer's current specs — I'm speaking from my experience, not as a certified warranty provider.
